Stanley Cup Champion Ryan Getzlaf Added To Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation Winter Classic Roster

The Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation is pleased to announce that Regina native and Stanley Cup Champion Ryan Getzlaf is the latest addition to the star-studded Winter Classic Roster.

The Roughrider Foundation Winter Classic presented by BASF Canadian Agriculture Solutions is in its second year and will bring together Roughrider players with NHL alumni, such as Getzlaf, and other former high-level athletes for a charity hockey game at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon at 12:30 p.m. on February 3, 2024. The event is organized by Roughrider kicker Brett Lauther, who will also serve as captain of Team Lauther presented by Saskatchewan Polytechnic. Former Roughrider receiver Chris Getzlaf will head Team Getzlaf presented by McDougall Auctioneers.

“I can’t wait to return to the province of Saskatchewan and take the ice with my brother Chris,” said the Anaheim Ducks’ all-time leading scorer Ryan Getzlaf. “The Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation does amazing work with youth across the province, and I am excited to be a part of this incredible event.”

Getzlaf was a first round selection (19th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and went on to have an incredible 17-year career with the Anaheim Ducks. He is the franchise’s all-time leading scorer as well as the all-time leader in games played, assists, and points and the all-time playoff leader in goals, assists and points. He finished his career with 282 goals, 737 assists, for 1,019 points, and an additional 120 points in 125 playoff games. He is a Stanley Cup Champion (2007) and a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, when he represented Canada in 2010 in Vancouver and 2014 in Sochi, Russia.

Ryan Getzlaf is just the latest star announced to be taking part in the charity hockey game, with Roughriders Lauther, Chris Getzlaf, Brayden Lenius and Jason Clermont announced earlier this week alongside NHLers Eric Gryba and Byron Bitz. More exciting roster news will be announced in the coming days.

In addition, one lucky fan will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lace up, hang out, and play on Team Lauther through a charity auction hosted by McDougall Auctioneers. Bids can be placed through the McDougall Auctioneers website. Bidding closes Thursday night at 8 p.m. SK time.

“We are thrilled to have a player of Ryan’s calibre joining us for this year’s Winter Classic,” said Lauther. “The area of mental well-being and its impact on youth is something that resonates with so many people, and it means so much to have Ryan and all of the Roughriders, Rider alumni and NHL alumni join us to give back to the kids in our province.”

The game itself is sure to be fun for the whole family and will include a Kids Zone, special giveaways and in-game activations as well as a player meet and greet and autograph opportunity after the game.

Proceeds from the Roughrider Foundation Winter Classic presented by BASF and the roster auction will help support the Roughrider Foundation’s Win with Wellness presentation series which brings trained Roughrider player ambassadors into Saskatchewan classrooms to speak on and promote the mental wellness.
