Melvin is entering his third year as the Roughriders linebackers coach, after a strong showing by the Roughriders linebackers corps in 2021 including coaching Micah Teitz to a team-leading 64 defensive tackles, and the Roughriders nomination for Most Outstanding Canadian.

Melvin joined the Riders with 30 years of coaching experience, spending time with the Western Illinois Leathernecks coaching their defensive run game and linebackers. Prior to joining the Leathernecks, Melvin was with the Lindenwood Lions where he coached the 2016 unit to a No. 8 ranking in the nation in defensive touchdowns scored. At the college level, Melvin has coached 10 All-American linebackers and two Buck Buchanan award-winning linebackers. He also coached 19 all-conference linebackers, 16 academic all-conference linebackers, two conference players of the year, and 11 linebackers who were named team MVP. Melvin was a guest coach at the Riders 2019 training camp.

Melvin is married to Beverly Melvin and they have two daughters, Lywanna (31) and Sherese (26).
