How long have you been dancing/cheering?
I grew up dancing at Dance Dimensions in Regina and was a part of their competitive dance troupe for many years. After graduating from Dance Dimensions, I joined the University of Regina Dance Team and have been with the team for three seasons. I continue my training weekly at Dance Dimensions and attend additional adult classes at Martin School of Dance and Collective Studios.
What are your career aspirations outside of being on the Cheer Team?
I completed a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Biology, at the University of Regina and am continuing my education at the U of R in a Bachelor of Education After Degree program. I am also the current Artistic Director and a dance instructor at Silton Silhouettes, a dance club based in Silton, Saskatchewan. When I finish my Education Degree, I hope to continue teaching dance, be a substitute te schoolteacher, and take on some biology field work during the summers.
What are your favourite performance styles?
My favourite style of dance to perform is jazz, but my favorite class to take is ballet!
What football position would you play?
If I was a Roughrider football player, I think I would make a great defensive back. I’m fast and agile, plus making interceptions would be incredibly exciting!
What is a cause you are passionate about?
I am passionate about science outreach and accessibility. I love science, but I believe there is room for improvement in the communication of scientific knowledge. I think it is really important for people of all ages to get involved in hands on science and the wonder that comes along with that. Science is so much more than just memorizing equations and facts! It is a growing field of discovery and research, and because of this, it is not stationary – there is always more to learn and find out. Science is hugely important in our daily lives, even if you don’t always notice it!
What does the Cheer Team add to Rider Game Days?
On game days, the Cheer Team adds an extra level of excitement for the fans! We help to create the lively game day atmosphere and cheer on the Riders to a WIN!
What advice would you give to an aspiring Cheer Team Member?
My advice for aspiring Cheer Team members is to keep working hard at whatever it is you do – cheer, dance, baton, gymnastics, you name it! – but also remember to take care of yourself! If you want to be on a team like the Rider Cheer Team, you’ll probably want to be dancing for a long time so it’s important to look after your physical and mental health. A lot of the common approaches in the performing arts are not sustainable for long careers. Making sure if you have an injury that you take the time to heal it before getting back to class and taking the extra steps to ensure you can continue your art form for years to come!
What is your favourite thing about Saskatchewan?
My favourite part of Saskatchewan is the nature! I love the trees, wildflowers, and animals, but I especially love the sunrises and sunsets in Saskatchewan. There is no place that has quite as beautiful skies as Saskatchewan does!
