Logan Ferland is eminently qualified to provide an expert appraisal of newly signed Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive tackle Mike Rose.
Rose, a three-time All-CFL selection with the Calgary Stampeders, routinely lined up opposite Ferland — who has been named the Roughriders’ Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman in each of the past three seasons.
“This is going to be monumental for us,” Ferland said of the signing of Rose.
“When I heard that he was released by Calgary, I was really looking forward to us having the opportunity to take him, so I’m very happy we did.”
Rose, a fourth-time divisional All-CFL selection in 2024, was released by Calgary on Jan. 27. Saskatchewan announced the signing of the 6-foot-3, 280-pounder on Saturday.
“He’s a very technical guy,” said Ferland, the West Division’s reigning Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman.
“He knows exactly where he needs to be and when he needs to be there. I think that’s what makes him a very good player.
“He’s very aware and a very smart player. You always want to learn from those guys because it can help slow down the game a lot.
“He’s really good at knowing and understanding leverage and body weight and where your weight is at.
“If you’re leaning too far forward, you’re going to be a face in the turf. If you’re standing up too tall, he’ll make sure to push you back into the quarterback.
“He does really well with leverage and I think that’s what makes him one of the top guys in the league.”
Ferland was on the Roughriders’ practice roster — as a member of the Prairie Football Conference’s Regina Thunder — when Rose registered his first CFL sack.
That landmark moment came at Mosaic Stadium against the Roughriders on July 6, 2019.
After the COVID-influenced cancellation of the 2020 CFL season, Ferland was installed as a starter to begin the 2021 campaign.
Typically the Roughriders’ starting right guard, Ferland has played against Rose in nine games.
“I’m just looking forward to getting better from a guy like Rose,” Ferland said. “He has a lot of experience in the league.
“Obviously, he’s always a challenge to go against, so learning from him is going to be a big benefit for us.”
