Cameron Marshall Returns to the Roughriders

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have welcomed back a familiar face.

Tailback Cameron Marshall, who played 10 games with the Roughriders during the 2017 CFL regular season, was added to the practice roster Monday. Saskatchewan had released him on the eve of training camp after he failed his physical due to the lingering effects of a knee injury he suffered last season.

Marshall, a 26-year-old product of San Jose, Calif., initially signed with the Roughriders in February of 2017. He had previous CFL experience with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, with whom he played 19 games over the 2014 and ’15 regular seasons.

A 5-foot-11, 215-pounder out of Arizona State University, Marshall won the job as Saskatchewan’s starting tailback in training camp last season.

He played the first nine regular-season games before hurting his left knee in a contest against Winnipeg on Sept. 3. He returned for one more game — against the Calgary Stampeders on Oct. 20 — but didn’t play again in the regular season or the playoffs.

Marshall finished the season as the Roughriders’ leader in carries (101) and rushing yards (543) and added 30 receptions for 280 yards.

He’ll join a backfield that currently comprises tailbacks Tre Mason and Marcus Thigpen. Head coach-GM Chris Jones said after cutting Jerome Messam on July 31 that the Roughriders would be adding another tailback — and Marshall is that man.

The Roughriders also announced Monday that they had activated defensive tackle Curt Maggitt off the suspended list. The 25-year-old from West Palm Beach, Fla., appeared in one regular-season game before being suspended.
