Sam Hurl rejoins the Roughriders

The Saskatchewan Roughriders continued to address their Canadian talent pool Wednesday by signing free-agent linebacker Sam Hurl.

All four of the players the Roughriders have signed so far this week are Canadians. Centre Dan Clark and fullback/special-teamer Spencer Moore signed contract extensions, while Hurl and Zack Evans were added as free agents.

Hurl, a 27-year-old product of Calgary, spent the past three seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

He began his CFL career with the Roughriders, who selected him in the second round (12th overall) of the 2012 CFL draft.

The 6-foot-1, 234-pound product of the University of Calgary played 42 games with Saskatchewan over the next three seasons, recording 41 tackles, 35 special-teams stops, three fumble recoveries and two sacks.

Hurl signed as a free agent with Winnipeg in February of 2015. In 48 games over his three seasons with the Bombers, he had 125 tackles, 12 special-teams takedowns and six sacks.

In 18 regular-season games in 2017, he recorded 65 tackles, eight quarterback pressures, one sack, one interception and one forced fumble.

With the Roughriders, Hurl will provide depth at middle linebacker behind fellow Canadian Henoc Muamba. Hurl also is a proven performer on special teams.
