Riders Take on Tiger-Cats in Search of First Win

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (0-1-0)
at Saskatchewan Roughriders (0-2-0)
Saturday, 8 p.m., Mosaic Stadium
TSN, CKRM

THE FORECAST: Environment Canada is calling for a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 31 C during the day. The evening is supposed to be clear with a temperature of 16 C.

THE LOWDOWN: The Roughriders and Tiger-Cats were two of the CFL’s three winless teams when Week 3 of the regular season began. The Ottawa Redblacks also were without a victory, but they had a tie on their slate … Hamilton had a Week 2 bye after dropping its opener 32-15 to the Toronto Argonauts on June 25. Saskatchewan lost 43-40 in double overtime to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last Saturday in the grand opening of Mosaic Stadium … The last time the Tiger-Cats and Roughriders met, Tyler Crapigna kicked a 29-yard field goal as time expired to lift Saskatchewan to a 20-18 victory on Sept. 24. That earned the Roughriders a split of the season series; Hamilton prevailed 53-7 at home on Aug. 20 … The Roughriders have a bye following Saturday’s game. Their next contest is July 22 in Calgary against the Stampeders. A win would do wonders for the Roughriders’ psyche going into a week-long break.

THE RIDERS’ ROSTER: Despite missing key field goals in each of Saskatchewan’s two regular-season games to date, Crapigna remains the Roughriders’ kicker. Crapigna got a vote of confidence earlier this week from head coach-GM Chris Jones, who stands by a kicker whose success rate entering the season was 87 per cent. Entering Week 3, Crapigna was tied for second in the CFL with seven successful field goals … Kevin Glenn starts at quarterback for the Roughriders. The 17-year veteran entered Week 3 with 675 yards passing this season — the third-highest such number in the league. Glenn is now 543 yards away from the 50,000-yard mark for his career … Rookie Antwane Grant takes over for Caleb Holley (shoulder) at one of the receiver positions. Grant was one of the stars of the Roughriders’ mini-camp in Florida in April and did enough at training camp to earn a spot on the practice roster. Now he gets a chance in a regular-season game … Nic Demski entered Week 3 as one of only two men in the CFL’s top 25 in receiving yards who was batting 1.000 this season. Demski has caught all 14 passes thrown in his direction, joining former Rider and current Argo Armanti Edwards (16-for-16 going into the week) as the only players without a miss … Tobi Antigha, who was scratched from the Roughriders’ lineup for the game against Winnipeg, draws in this week. He takes the roster spot of Jonathan Newsome, who was released Tuesday … Middle linebacker Henoc Muamba was put on the six-game injured list prior to the contest against the Bombers and therefore missed the game. On Tuesday, Muamba was back at practice, meaning he’s being taken off the six-game list early. He’ll start in the middle, which bumps Sam Eguavoen to a backup role … The Roughriders’ secondary had numerous busts against the Bombers, leaving receivers uncovered throughout the contest. If that isn’t addressed, changes could be in the offing in the future — but none are being made for Saturday’s game.
