The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today the signing of Ricky Schmitt to the active roster. Financial details of the agreement were not released.

Schmitt (6’3 – 213) joins the Riders after most recently spending time with the Arizona Cardinals during the 2012 NFL pre-season where he punted 12 times for a 44.8 yard average. The 27-year old Virginia native began his pro career originally signing an undrafted free-agent contract with the Cardinals in 2007. Schmitt also spent time in the NFL with San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Oakland, Tennessee and San Diego.

A graduate of Shepherd University (West Virginia) where he excelled in both punting and placekicking, Schmitt was named first team All-WVIAC three-times as a punter and was a two-time first team selection as a kicker.

It is obvious that Sandro D handling the punting duties has affected his place kicking. The move tho get the best punter available import or non import was needed to be a priority for the Riders and with the limited available Canadian punters Schmitt has been around in NFL cmaps for the past few seasons and and almost 45 yard avg in pre season this year Schmidt has hit the CFL radar. Deangelous need not worry about punting and can concentrate on the important place kicking duties in which is a position that can mean the diference between a loss and a win a loss. The loss side is where the riders have been on the past tow games do to this
