Well how about that? We went to Calgary where the so called experts said we had no chance of winning…and we did…how about that! It was great to get back into the win column this past Saturday night, especially against a western opponent…a win in August is just as a good as a win in October. It was definitely a tough game but our defense played awesome against one of the best offenses in the league. Our special teams made some nice plays and set up the offense with some great field position. On offense we did some really good things too and found a good rhythm throughout most of the game. Cates ran the ball very well and Getzlaf had an outstanding game. People said it was a breakout game for him but I clearly remember him playing extremely well all of last year and he’s quickly becoming one of the best young Canadian receiver in this league. It was nice to have Mean Gene back into the lineup and flying around out there. Chris Best had played outstanding during his absence but was relegated to 6th man last week, a faith I had to deal with over the last 2 years. He definitely made the best (no pun intended) out of his opportunity and proved he can be a starter in this league. The game was quite a tough one, back and forth with them but in the end we just needed one more point than they did to win it. Some of us made it tougher than it had to be by taking a not-so-well-timed penalty in the last minute of the game…not great. Game speed and real world speed is a little different and it proved to be costly that night. I like to think that I play with an edge, just like the rest of our o-linemen. Just like I had done all game long, I tried to play physical on that play and took a bad penalty, something out of character for me. Luckily it didn’t cost of the game and I was able to breathe a little easier. After the game I ran up to coach Miller in the tunnel and assured him that this would never happen again, not at a moment when the game is on the line. He didn’t say anything, just nodded…he knows me and what kind of player I am.
Besides all the time we spend at practices and games together, the o-line all went out to golf last week during our only day off. Aspen Links in White City took really good care of us and the golf course looked awesome. We broke off in 3 groups and Wayne Smith and I paired up against Joel Bell and Nick Hutchins…we were the not-so-serious group because none of us are too good, although Nick does have a good swing. I managed to only lose 6 balls over 9 holes but in my defense I lost 3 in one hole alone…stupid water hazard! Wayne struggled quite a bit too, he had a strong slice to the left…I mean really bad. Before teeing off the 2nd hole he said “I bet I hit a house before it’s over” to which we all laughed at…then he teed off and guess what…yup, he hit a house. He did it again a few holes later but then changed his stance…instead of facing straight to tee off he angled himself to point severely to the right and from then on he was our best golfer for the rest of the day. The other groups took it a little more serious and kept score, probably because some of them are actually good. We had a great time that day and it gave us all a chance to bond off the field and built some more chemistry as a group.
Now we look forward to the next game against a BC, a team that may have struggled early this season but also a team that has the talent to win alot of games this year. The upside of traveling to BC is we’ll probably do “Le Tour De Fat” once again because it has brought us good luck in the past. For those of you who actually read this blog weekly you’ll remember what that tour is all about and how it works. Sure it’s gonna be another tough game…and the dome will be hot…and they’ll pump in crowd noise over the speakers…but that’s what makes it so fun…and I tell you my friends, I’m not making this stuff up…
