Following what was a season full of peaks and valleys, the Roughriders had plenty of decisions to make during the off-season leading into the 2012 campaign.
The retirement of interim Head Coach Ken Miller, who took over the position after Greg Marshall was relieved of his coaching duties midway through the season, meant that once again, the hunt for the next Head Coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders was underway.
When Miller resigned, it not only created a vacancy as the lead man on the sidelines, but also left a void in the front office, as he had also held the role of V.P of Football Operations. That position was filled quickly, as the club announced Taman would be taking over control of Football Operations, and former Rider All-Star Jeremy O’Day will now be working alongside him, assuming the role of Assistant General Manager.
With the front office staff in place, Taman could solely focus on finding the next Head Coach of the Green & White. The choice was his, and he repeatedly let it be known he would not be rushed into making a snap decision, instead choosing a thorough approach, wanting to ensure he made the correct choice.
On December 15th 2011, it was announced that Corey Chamblin would become the club’s 29th Head Coach in modern history.
Chamblin, 34, comes to the Riders with an extensive resume having spent time in the NFL, NFL Europe and most recently the past four seasons as a position coach and defensive coordinator in the CFL.
Upon being named Head Coach, Chamblin’s focus turned to the coaching staff that would be joining him for the 2012 season. During his introductory press conference Chamblin made a statement to the media regarding the future of Saskatchewan’s team.
“The pieces are in place, and I think there will be more pieces coming in that will help us get to where we want to be.”
With that statement in mind, the 2012 coaching staff has been finalized and the collective group have begun preparing for what should be an exciting season ahead.
Corey Chamblin – Head Coach
Prior to joining the Green and White, Chamblin was most recently the Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Chamblin spent three seasons working with the defensive backs in Calgary where the Stamps secondary had great success and were looked upon as some of the toughest defensive backs in the CFL. In 2008 the Stamps claimed the Grey Cup after holding the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player Anthony Calvillo without a touchdown pass in the championship game. Over the course of his time in Calgary, Chamblin led a number of players to great achievements including Brandon Browner who is a current starting cornerback for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.
When he first arrived in the CFL in 2007, Chamblin served as the Defensive Backs Coach with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers who had the second best pass defence in the CFL. They also held the MOP of that season - Kerry Joseph to a mere 181 passing yards in the Grey Cup game.
